Donor Registration Request Blood

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about blood donation.

To donate blood, you generally need to be in good health, be at least 17 or 18 years old (depending on state laws), and weigh at least 110 pounds (50 kg). You will also need to pass a physical and health history assessment on the day of donation.

You can donate whole blood every 56 days (8 weeks). If you are donating other blood components like platelets or plasma, the frequency may vary. For example, platelet donors can donate as often as every 7 days, up to 24 times a year.

The entire process for a whole blood donation takes about 45-60 minutes, which includes registration, a mini-physical, the donation itself (which is only about 10 minutes), and post-donation refreshments. An apheresis donation (platelets, plasma) can take about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Before your donation, make sure to eat a healthy, low-fat meal and drink plenty of water. Get a good night's sleep. Wear comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled up above your elbows. Also, bring a photo ID with you.

Absolutely. Blood donation is very safe. All needles and supplies used for donation are new, sterile, and used only once before being disposed of. You cannot get any infectious disease from donating blood.

After donation, your blood is tested for blood type and infectious diseases. It is then separated into components like red cells, plasma, and platelets. A single donation can help save up to three lives. These components are then distributed to hospitals to help patients in need.
