Facts about Thalassemia
Statistics of Society
760 cases are registered with society. 404(74%) cases are of B thalassemia major. 450 are coming to the society for regular blood transfusion. 285 cases are on Iron chelation. 15 –20 % cases can’t afford Iron chelation because of financial constraints.
Management of Thalassemia
Saline washed packed red cell blood transfusions every 3 – 4 weeks to maintain hemoglobin above 10 gm/dl. Iron Chelation therapy after 20 blood transfusions. Periodic medical checkup for serum ferritin level, liver function test & screening for hepatitis B and C, HIV , renal function tests, serum calcium & phosphorus level, dental checkup, cardiac checkup and endocrine function tests. Bone marrow transplantation can cure the disease but in only 30% of siblings can Histocompatibility Linked Antigen (HLA) matched donor is available. Besides it is very expensive and there are chances of rejection.
Cost of the Treatment
Blood Transfusions is Free from Red Cross Society. Leucodepletion Filters Rs. 1,000/- per Transfusion.
Iron Chelation
Desferral (Parental Chelation): - a. Pump Rs. 14,100/- b. Drugs Rs. 8,000/- to 10,000/- per month. Kelfer (Oral Chelation): - a. Drugs Rs. 2,000/- to 3,000/- per month. Other: b. Drugs & Disposables Rs. 500/- to 1,000/- per month.
Appeal to individuals & Families
Donate blood once in every four months. Adopt a thalassemic child for treatment and management. Appeal to Government & Pharmaceutical Companies Subsidization of drugs used in Thalassemia management and treatment aid and contribution for the awareness programmes of genetic diseases and in particular screening, management and treatment of Thalassemia.
